Statistics in Saudi Arabia indicate that there is an increase in divorce rate in Saudi Society. The number of divorce cases in 1426 was (24.862) case and the number of marriages was (119.294), which means that the average of divorce to marriage is 21%. There is (2.071) cases every month, and 69 cases every day, and 3 cases every one hour (Ministry of Justice, 1426).
The aim of this study is to show the impact of social changes that took place in Saudi society on divorce rate, and the main reasons of divorce from women`s perspective. Depending on case study method, I met 30 divorced women by using Snow Ball sample. I used interview and questionnaire in collecting my data.
The main changes that took place in Saudi society are : the discovery of oil, changes on Saudi social structure, changes on family size and family functions, people become more consumer than productive, the spread of education for both sexes, women`s work and their economic independence, technological equipments such as dishes, internet and cellular phones.
The study shows that the most important reasons for divorce from women`s point of view are: irresponsibility, emotional ambivalence, bad behavior, cheating, differences between husband and wife in personalities, parents` interferences, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction, barrenness, and finally (mesyar) marriage.
Usually, there are more than one reason for divorce. Lack of alternatives, may delay women`s decisions for divorce but it will not prevent it. Women`s education and economic independence help women to make the decision of divorce, but they are not the reasons for divorce. In general, education and work have changed women`s attitudes towards marriage and divorce. |
