Abstract
:
Tourisms is one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy. It is claimed that tourisms can expect to experience phenomenal increases in earnings and effects on economies. Many developing countries are therefore encouraged to open up their economies and develop the tourism sector for their share of the profits. Tourism could be the leading sector for development given its capability to produce income and employment. Agenda 21 is a comprehensive programme of action adopted by 182 governments at the United Nation Conference on Environment and Development, (The earth summit) on 14 June 1992, in Rio De Janiro. This Agenda is the first document of its kind to achieve international recognition for securing the sustainable future of the planet, from now into the twenty - first century. It identifies the environment and development issues, which threaten to bring about economic and ecological catastrophe and present a strategy for transition to more sustainable development practices. While conceding that uncontrolled growth of tourism can result in serious environmental and social problems, the United Nations contends that such negative effects can be controlled and reduced. This study aims to highlight the economic importance of tourism and argue that the development of tourism needs to be more sustainable. Sustainable tourism development meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future. Beginning with the concept of tourism, its type, factors, and its economic impacts on developments, this study shows the importance of protecting the environment for sustainable tourism development.
