Abstract
:
The study aims at determining the various strategies managers use for coping with employees’ resistance to change.?In particular, the study tries to answer the following questions: 1) What are the strategies that managers in public agencies use to cope with employees’ resistance to change??2) What is the most and least used strategy??3) Is there a relationship between the demographic factors and the employees’ perceptions about the managers’ uses of these strategies??To answer these questions, a non-probability sample of 355 employees from the various public agencies representing the different organizational levels participated in the study. Results showed that managers in public agencies use four strategies to cope with employees’ resistance to change: containment, participation and involvement, manipulation and co-optation, and coercion.?Containment and participation and involvement represented the most used strategies, while coercion was perceived to be the least used strategy.?Participants in the study were divided concerning the managers’ use of manipulation and co-optation; while some participants believe that managers use this strategy, others see the contrary.?Regarding the relationship between demographic factors and the employees’ perceptions about managers’ uses of these strategies, the findings showed that there is a significant negative relationship between level of education and employee’s rank and the use of manipulation and co-optation strategy.?Others demographic factors did not have significant relationships with the other strategies.?The study ended with some recommendations.
