Abstract
:
The importance of this study stems from its scarcity and essential subject it deals with (delegation of authority). Analyzing the actual practices of delegation including problems and ways of effective application of delegation may improve management in both public and private organizations as well. This study aims at analyzing actual practices of delegation of authority in a sample of Jordanian institutions in both public and private sectors. It employs descriptive analysis and field study approaches. The study includes (767) employees from different organizational levels in (31) public institutions and (46) private companies in Jordan. It represents a survey of employees attitudes with regards to selected aspects of delegation of authority and their application in the surveyed institutions and companies. Among major findings of the study are: 1. A huge gap exists between the belief in the delegation of principle and its scope of application. 2. Motivations for delegation ate similar in both sectors in Jordan. 3. Methods of delegation vary within each and among sectors. 4. Significant obstacles to delegation exist in both sectors. These obstacles include lack of confidence between superiors and subordinates. Among recommendations of this study are: 1. Closing the gap between theory and practice with regards to delegation of authority. 2. The adoption of well-organized system of delegation of authority. 3. Undertaking of future studies in this area (delegation of authority).
